Elon Musk (picture), the CEO of Tesla, has finally jumped into the generative AI war. This follows the official launch of his sixth company, the AI company 'xAI', on the 12th (local time). As the world's richest man, Musk's entry is expected to further heat up the fierce competition for AI development, with the company's fate at stake, among ChatGPT developer OpenAI, Microsoft (MS), Google, and others.
Originally, Musk was a founding member of OpenAI, but after a conflict with CEO Sam Altman, he divested all his OpenAI shares and broke ties in 2018. After the release of ChatGPT to the public in November last year, Musk repeatedly pointed out that "ChatGPT is politically biased". He also expressed his wish to "create an AI model that pursues truth more than ChatGPT".
News of Musk's AI company was revealed in April when he registered a corporation named 'X.AI' in Nevada, USA. In May, he referred to the AI chatbot competition between MS and Google, saying, "There must be an important third horse in this race". This was interpreted as showing his intention to develop his own chatbot and compete with the two companies.
On the day, xAI officially announced its launch through its website, stating, "Our goal is to understand the true nature of the universe." The revealed members include a total of 12 people, including Musk, from Google DeepMind, which developed AlphaGo, OpenAI, MS, Tesla, etc.
While xAI is a separate company from X Corp, the parent company of Twitter, it announced plans to closely cooperate with Musk's other companies, such as Twitter and Tesla. With this, the number of companies owned by Musk has increased to a total of six.
