Sylvia, exhausted by parenting, and Will, a beer brewer reunite after a long time, finding laughter and vitality reminiscent of their carefree days enabling them to forget their rigid lives
Sylvia (Rose Byrne) is a housewife in her 40s. She has a stable life with her lawyer husband and three children. It's as good as life can get. However, even Sylvia has issues. Once a competent lawyer, she experienced career interruption due to childbirth and childcare. Most of all, she has a sense of loss, feeling that her youth is no longer hers. It's a desperate time where she yearns for a friend to bare her heart to and spend time aimlessly with. News of her long-lost friend Will (Seth Rogen), with whom she lost touch for 20 years, getting divorced reaches her.

Will's situation is different from Sylvia's but also similar in many ways. As a beer brewing expert, he had just started his business when he got an unexpected divorce. Possessing a unique fashion sense and sophisticated taste, he often faces discord with people around him. His business partners prioritize profit in the beer brewing business, but Will values the dignity of the beer. Living a more unstable life than Sylvia, he too is facing a midlife crisis. When Sylvia and Will reunite after a long time, they get drunk just like in the old days and behave like immature youngsters. Will buys a dog leash to wear as a necklace and they exchange naughty jokes. The two feel rejuvenated after a long time and become close friends again as if nothing has changed.
When middle-aged men and women hang out until dawn, it can raise suspicions from those around them. Even if they consider each other as friends, feelings may blossom between the two. But Sylvia and Will are different. They are just a 'female friend' and a 'male friend' to each other.
The drama extracts laughter from the everyday life that Sylvia and Will experience. When Sylvia looks for a new house, Will accompanies her as a good advisor. When Will faces difficulties in the brewery, Sylvia helps him out. When Sylvia lands a job and faces a tricky situation, Will tries to resolve it, although he's not of much help. Sylvia and Will are soulmates who don't see each other as members of the opposite sex. The emotion they share is sweet but it's not romantic. Even though the story unfolds like a romantic comedy, it's a heartwarming comedy.

Any middle-aged person might envy Sylvia and Will. It's rare to have someone with whom you can share your deepest secrets and problems, and who can lend immediate help when faced with difficulties.
'Platonic' might be an idealistic story for modern people worn out by life. Sylvia's husband, Charlie (Luke Macfarlane), who has close ties with Will and trusts his wife despite slight jealousy and suspicion, may be an overly unrealistic character. But sometimes, painkillers have a more positive effect on life than stimulants. The laughter produced by Sylvia, Will, and Charlie is sufficient to make you forget the rigors of daily life.
