  Comparing with vertical analysis-Vertical analysis goes up and down the income statement for one year comparing all other accounts to sales This analysis gives the company a heads up if cost of goods sold or any other expense appears to be too high when compared to sales. Reviewing these comparisons allows management and accounting staff at the company to isolate the reasons and take action to fix the problem. Figure 14-2 is an example of how to prepare a vertical analysis for two years. As with the horizontal analysis,you'll need to use more years for any meaningful trend analysis. This figure compares the difference in accounts from 2020 to 2021, showing the percentage change from one year to the next. Looking at the differences,no increase or decrease jumps out at me in addition to cost of goods sold, which I discuss in the "Using horizontal analysis" section earlier in this chapter. Looking at the differences in the gross profit and net income percentages year over year, the company appears to be managing all other expenses in an appropriate fashion.
