풍전등화 더그 포드의 보수당 정부?

더그 포드가 이끄는 온주 보수당은 2018년 6월 선거에서 압승을 하면서 정권을 잡았습니다.
장장 15년간이나 집권해온 자유당을 폭망하게 만든 온주 주민들!

그런데 권불10년! 화무 십일홍!
연거퍼 세차례나 절대적인 지지를 받은 포드정부는 이제는 배가 좀 많이 불러졌나봅니다.

7월은 포드 총리와 스탠 조 의원, 그리고 보수당에 무척 잔인한 달이다.
포드로서는 자신이 타겟이 되고 궁지에 몰리게 될 경우엔 가차없이 몇 명의 주의원들을 늑대 앞에 제물로 바칠 자세가 돼 있을 걸로 추측한다.

우선 먼저 윌로데일 지역구를 자유당에게 넘겨주어도 어쩔 수 없다! 라는 판단을 내릴 걸로 예상된다.

지난 6월 중순에 발표된 여론조사, 정당 및 당대표 지지도 조사에선 재미있는 결과가 나왔다.
즉 보수당 정당 지지율은 41%로 높은데, 포도 총리의 지지도는 21% 로 캐나다 전국 10명의 주총리 중 최하위를 기록했다.
즉 포드는 물러날 때가 됐다는 얘기이다.

거짓 눈물 내보이며 스탠의 주의원 직을 박탈해가는 수순이 될거라 본다.
어떡하겠는가? 우선 내가 살아야만 하지 않겠는가?

지난 25년동안 온주보수당 열성당원인 김치맨이다.
그런데 트럼프가 미국 대통령이 된 후부터 더그 포드의 대미정책에 불만이 크다.
미국의 관세정책에 대항한다면서 미국에 수출한 전기를 단전하겠다 했다.
아니? 트럼프가 밉다고 미국 시민들이 쓰는 전기를 단전해버린다구?
그 지역 미국인들은 트럼프가 아니라 포드를 욕할 게 아닌가?

그리고 또! 관세철폐를 요구하며 미국산 주류의 수입및 판매를 전면중단해버린 포드총리이다.
LCBO 라는 주정부에서 독점으로 술장사하기에 그게 가능하다.
자! 지금껏 몇십년간 미제 양주/와인 즐겨마시던 애주가들은 포드에게 소리없는 원성을 퍼부어 댈 것이 아닌가?
"지가 주총리면 총리지! 내가 내돈 주고 미국 술 사마시겠다는데! 그 술을 못 마시게 해? 다음 총선 때 보자! 보수당 표 절대 안 찍을거니까!"

이제 곧 여론조사 결과가 발표될 것이다.
온주보수당과 포드총리의 지지도가 어찌 나올지 매우 궁금하다.
그러나 안 봐도 비디오 아니겠는가?
이번 조사에선 보수당지지도는 30%대! 포드 지지도는 10%대!

아무려나!
이제는 포드가 당대표직 사임을 할 때가 됐다!
하긴! 넉달씩이나 주의회 문 걸어잠구고 주의원들에게 실컷 잘들 노시라 배려하는 조치했던 더그 포드 총리 아닌가?

이제는 포드 총리 뿐만이 아니라, 수십명 보수당 주의원들이 모두 단체로 집에들 가서 손주들 봐주기 하게 된것 같다.

우리 온주 보수당의 계속 집권을 위해서 더그 포드가 즉각 퇴진해야만 한다.

Has Premier Ford become overconfident?

Not long ago, his government planned to purchase a $30-million executive jet, only to reverse course after a public backlash. The aircraft was quickly sold. One question still lingers in my mind: Was the proper Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) paid on both the purchase and the resale? We're talking about millions of dollars in tax.

July has been an especially brutal month for Premier Ford, MPP Stan Cho, and the Progressive Conservative Party.

If Ford himself becomes the primary target of public anger, I suspect he will have little hesitation in sacrificing a few caucus members to protect his own political survival.

Willowdale may well be the first casualty. Ford could decide that losing the riding to the Liberals is simply the price that must be paid.

A public opinion poll released in mid-June produced an interesting result. The Progressive Conservatives still enjoyed strong party support at 41%, yet Doug Ford's personal approval rating stood at only 21%—the lowest among Canada's ten provincial premiers.

That sends a clear message: many Ontarians believe it is time for Ford to step aside.

Then came the hotel expense scandal involving Stan Cho on July 14, followed by questions surrounding spending by his constituency office. Cho has already resigned from cabinet, but he is undoubtedly hoping to remain an MPP.

Whether that will be possible is another matter.

As both Premier and leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, Doug Ford holds the political knife. To shield himself from criticism over his own judgment and leadership, he may eventually conclude that Stan Cho must also lose his seat in caucus. Politics is often about survival. When your own position is threatened, saving yourself usually comes first.

I have been a loyal member of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party for the past 25 years.

Yet since Donald Trump returned to the White House, I have become increasingly dissatisfied with Doug Ford's approach toward the United States.

Ford even threatened to cut off electricity exports to the U.S. in response to American tariffs.

Really?

If electricity were cut off, it wouldn't be Donald Trump who suffered first—it would be ordinary American families and businesses. Those Americans would likely blame Doug Ford, not Donald Trump.

Ford also halted the import and sale of American alcoholic beverages through the LCBO as part of the trade dispute.

Because the Ontario government controls liquor sales through the LCBO, it had the authority to do so.

But what about the many Ontarians who have enjoyed American wine and whiskey for decades?

Some of them may quietly be thinking:

"Premier Ford can run the government, but why should he decide what I can or cannot buy with my own money? If I want to purchase American liquor, why should the government stop me? I'll remember this at the next election—and I certainly won't be voting Progressive Conservative."

Another round of public opinion polling will soon be released.

I am very curious to see where support for the Progressive Conservatives—and for Doug Ford personally—now stands.

But perhaps the outcome is already predictable.

I would not be surprised if PC support falls into the 30-percent range, while Ford's personal approval drops into the teens.

In my view, the time has come for Doug Ford to resign as party leader.

After all, this is the same premier who shut down the Legislative Assembly for months at a time, effectively giving MPPs an extended holiday while important issues remained unresolved.

Unless the Progressive Conservative Party changes course, many of its MPPs may soon find themselves back home, spending more time babysitting their grandchildren than serving in the Legislature.

For the long-term future of Ontario's Progressive Conservative Party, Doug Ford should step down immediately.
